The Wiltshire area of Tetbury Hill near Malmesbury was the setting for a very special series of steeplechase race meetings which were held on Baron C Tuyll’s estate for a four year period starting on Thursday 24th March 1881. The next year the meeting was held on Wednesday 29th March 1882 and opened with the Folly Stakes in which Mr Blagrave’s Rosebud beat Tramp and Profligate. The principal race, the Tetbury Cup, was won in emphatic style by Captain Playfair’s Limerick Lace, while the concluding Welter Stakes went to Mr T Butt’s Columbine. Races continued for a further two years before the final card was staged on Thursday 20th March 1884. |
